Modern diesel cars use a NOx sensor to measure the nitrogen oxide levels in the exhaust. When levels are too high, the sensor tells the engine management system, which adjusts to keep emissions within legal limits. A faulty NOx sensor will usually trigger the engine warning light.

NOx sensors are complex and can be expensive to replace. The good news is that the fault is often in the probe part of the sensor, and in many cases that can be replaced without the cost of a full new unit.
